What is Beta-Alanine? Beta-alanine (also spelt β-alanine) is a non-essential amino acid that is produced in the liver in humans and is also found in animal products such as meat and fish. β-alanine plays a crucial role in the synthesis of the dipeptide carnosine, which consists of β-alanine and histidine. Here, β-alanine is the limiting component of the process. Carnosine is present in high concentrations in muscle tissue, particularly in the fast-twitch type II muscle fibres, which are responsible for maximum loads. It is mainly used as a pH buffer to prevent acidosis.  Various studies show that supplementation with β-alanine can increase the carnosine content of the muscles.
