This non-proteinogenic amino acid is synthesized by the body itself and plays a vital role in metabolism. In the urea cycle, it acts as an intermediate in the breakdown of ammonia, which is converted into the less toxic urea. During this process, L-citrulline is converted into L-arginine, which in turn is a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide (NO) is essential for dilating blood vessels.
L-citrulline is generally not offered in isolation but often in combination with malate. Malate, a form of malic acid, masks the typical bitter taste of the amino acid and provides a slightly sour flavor.
